Design and Growth Are Not Different Jobs

Hiring a design studio and a marketing agency for the same project is paying twice for them to misunderstand each other. Here's the operating model that fixes it.

Hiring a design studio and a marketing agency for the same project is paying twice for them to misunderstand each other.

The design studio makes a beautiful site. The marketing agency runs growth experiments on top of it. Then something underperforms and nobody owns the answer to why. The studio blames the offer. The agency blames the design. The client pays both for the privilege of mediating.

The Split Is the Problem

We built our agency around one conviction: that split is the problem.

Design without growth is decoration. Growth without design is spam.

The companies that compound are the ones where every visual decision is accountable to whether the site actually converts, and every growth experiment is accountable to whether the site still feels like the brand at the end.

That’s a different operating model.

What It Actually Means

Designers care about SEO/GEO. Page structure, semantic HTML, content hierarchy—all decisions made with growth in mind from the first wireframe. Not bolted on afterward by someone who inherited the file.

Growth operators care about brand. They don’t ship a landing page that breaks the visual system to get a 3% lift. They iterate within the brand, because the brand compounds longer than the lift does.

Engineering builds for both. Component libraries are designed to be on-brand and easy to test variants against. The infrastructure assumes you’ll want to experiment without wrecking the system.

One Team, One Question

The output is a single team that owns the answer to “is this working, and is it still our brand?”—instead of two teams that each own half of that question and point at each other when the number is bad.

Watch which agencies grow over the next two years. They’ll be the ones that stopped pretending design and growth are different jobs.
